Faculty of Arts Legislative Council has approved the bill to create the office of Director of Welfare Services as part of the executive council of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students.
It was approved at the third reading in the legislative sitting held on Friday, 24th January, 2025 after the presentation of the report of the committee stage by Hon. Yeboah Daniel from Religious Studies Constituency.
After deliberations on the recommendations of the bill, it was put to a vote in which 10 honourable members voted in support of the bill, while only 2 honourable members voted against the approval of the bill.
However, the Speaker, Rt Hon Olajide Miqdad maintained that he would not append his signature on the bill after the president’s assent for the sake of posterity.
“The bill sponsored and the committee report on the bill is contradicting the duties of one of the Executives.
There is overlap of duties from the Social director and the welfare director as the bill seeks to establish the office separately; the bill also has overlapping duties of the office of the Vice President.”
Also, Rt. Hon Miqdad also mentioned that the bill was approved based on the majority decision of the house and it becomes law after the president’s assent.
“The bill becomes a law after the president’s assent. But if the President refuses to give assent to it, it will be brought back to the house for the ⅔ majority of the house for approval.”
Recall that the bill sponsored by Hon Adedeji Gbolahan from Religious Studies Constituency on the 4th plenary sitting of the house held on Friday, 23rd August, 2024, seeks to amend Chapter Two (2), Article Ten (10), Article Eleven (11) and Chapter Eight (8), Article Forty (40), Article Forty-Three (43) of the Constitution of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students.
