AFAS Press Launches Maiden Edition of Premier Times Magazine

The Association of Faculty of Arts Students (AFAS) Press Organisation has launched the first edition of the Premier Times Magazine on Tuesday, 25th February, 2025, at Room 34, Faculty of Arts during the magazine launch and handover ceremony.

Reviewing the magazine themed “Premier Renaissance: Transforming Education, Transforming Nigeria”, renowned broadcaster and book reviewer, Michael Olatunbosun, stated that the magazine provided insightful analysis and thought-provoking discussions on education and development.

“The magazine has got some of the best written pieces I have read. By my reckoning, there are about nineteen articles in this magazine, including the notes from the editor, the editorial board news, news items, opinions, features, creative write-ups, poems, and interviews,” he said.

Olatunbosun commended the editorial board for doing a fantastic job and credited the writers for crafting the very beautiful articles.

He advised that anyone who seeks knowledge should get the magazine and recommended that copies be sent to major stakeholders.

“I recommend very strongly that multiple copies of this magazine should be sent to major stakeholders, on and off campus, including deans, heads of departments, staff advisers, the registrar, the general administration, the vice-chancellor, The Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Sports.”

Earlier Michael Awoyemi, President of the Institute of African Studies Students Association, represented Professor Sola Olorunyomi, Director of the Institute of African Studies. Awoyemi urged students to reevaluate the economics of education and ensure that their academic pursuits positively impact their communities.

He emphasized that journalism is the pursuit of truth, the amplification of voices often unheard, and the watchdog that holds power accountable.

“The responsibility of a press, like AFAS Press, is first the defence of rights of free speech and thoughts, not only within the faculties alone but also in the public space. The press has all that will contribute to the conversations on the public space about the defence of education and enlightenment, particularly in the institutions that are gradually taking the shape of becoming factories.”

The event was graced by AFAS President, AFAS FLC Speaker, Staff Adviser, Barr Dr Oke; Prof Sola Olorunyomi, Director, Institute of African Studies, ably represented by Michael Awoyemi, President, African Studies Students Association.
