AFAS Electoral College Concludes By-Election, Chairman Advises Against Apathy

The Association of Faculty of Arts Students (AFAS) Electoral College has concluded its by-election, resulting in the election of two students into the office of the Treasurer and the office of the Financial Secretary.
The election, conducted on Wednesday, saw Mohammed Kehinde Okunola emerge as Treasurer with 11 votes, while Okunola Abigeal Oluwakemi was elected Financial Secretary with 9 votes and 2 undecided. Only 11 out of 12 Electoral College members voted, as efforts to reach one representative proved abortive
Speaking with AFAS Press, Chairman of the Electoral College, Ayodele Akinwunmi, praised the integrity of the process and the commitment of the members. “I must commend the diligence of the Electoral College members because they really put in a lot to ensure that the candidates were properly checked,” he said. “Every step leading to the election was carefully taken, and that ensured the election went on without problems as expected.”
However, he expressed concern over the growing trend of sole candidacy across all contested offices. “It’s a bit disturbing to know that people are not open to service,” Ayodele stated. “Though it might not be their fault, there are people with the capacity who don’t know they have it, and also people who have local experience who shy away from trying for something on a higher level. Then we also have the issue of apathy.”
He emphasised the need for more sensitization and encouragement across the faculty. “Frankly, the best we can do is to sensitize our constituencies, members, colleagues, and even ourselves not to shy away from taking up important and vital roles. Service brings experience,” he added.
Recall that AFAS Press had earlier reported that three positions were to be contested in the by-election, but the position of the Director of Social and Welfare Services was excluded after the disqualification of the sole aspirant.
The results were announced by the Electoral College Public Relations Officer, Alao Ayatullahi, and e-signed by the Secretary, Ojo Afolasade and the Chairman, Ayodele Akinwunmi.
