Can we meet you?
My name is Joshua Oba, I am a 400 level student of the University of Ibadan, History Department. I make music and I go by the stage name Joshking.
How did you come about your stage name?
It is a combination of both my name and surname, Joshua Oba.
what year did you start singing?
I started in the year 2021
What has been your inspiration as a songwriter?
As a songwriter, my biggest inspiration would be my emotions. It could be drawn from the present or past experiences. Most times each lyric is intentional depending on what I have in mind.
What is your genre of music/ songs?
Since you have been making music, have you released any track or album of your own
Yes I put out an EP in 2023. It’s titled “Be my guest” and it’s up on all streaming platforms.
What would you say is your unique attribute that sets you apart from other singers?
My originality; I don’t try to sound like others. I have my sound and I own it because the lyrics and how I convey them are unique.
Are there any challenges you have experienced so far you’ve started?
Funding, I will say. Having to keep the music coming, to record, to promote, to make videos . But I have been able to find the means to.
How have been able to balance singing and academics?
Singing for me is leisure.It comes with ease, most times after lectures or at my convenience. But so far I have been able to balance both.
How do you handle criticism from fans or studios where you record?
Critics are normal, I take it as a means to improve myself, but I don’t take all criticism to heart if I detect that the criticism is coming from envy or lies.
As an upcoming artiste who is your role model in the music industry?
Burna Boy and wizkid. Their drive, longevity in the industry, how far they’ve come, and how they have stayed relevant over the years inspires me to keep pushing.
Are you considering music as a career? Or do you have something else in mind?
I wouldn’t be doing music if I considered something else as my career. I want to do music professionally. I have been doing it for four years and I love it.
Tell us about your goals and aspirations?
My goals… A realistic one, I would say to win the next rated award in the Grammy. Why not? To have the country on lockdown for a year. To stay relevant that will get me to the category of top artiste.
So very quickly, what’s that word of encouragement you’d give to students who might want to consider singing alongside schooling.
For students who would like to consider singing alongside schooling, I would say it is possible! Just make sure your music career doesn’t affect your studies. That is literally my advice.
