After about three weeks of intense football at the Inter-faculty Competition, Association of Faculty of Arts Students’ male team has emerged as the champions and the best team in the University of Ibadan after beating BAMSSA 8 to 7 on penalties Wednesday, Match 20, 2024.

The match, which started by 4pm with UI different dignitaries in attendance, was an unyielding and resilient one having both teams in their best performance.

Although AFAS male team took the lead early into the first half after Awolowo fired in a penalty caused by a foul, BAMSSA equalised towards the end of first half. And by the end of first half both teams were levelled at a goal each.

The game became more intense in second half with Selica being heavily marked by BAMSSA’s number 17, and BAMSSA defence being a tough one to break through. This left AFAS team frustrated. BAMSSA had better chances at scoring more goals in second half than AFAS did, but their goalkeeper and defender, Ikechukwu and Iyanu, gave BAMSSA forwards a tough time.

By the end of second half, both teams were deadlocked at a goal each, while the match proceeded to a penalty shootout immediately without extra time.

A total of 9 penalties were played by both teams. While AFAS lost one of their penalties, BAMSSA lost two. The last penalty lost by the BAMSSA player sealed the fate for both teams— AFAS emerged as winner of the Inter-faculty Competition, and BAMSSA first runner-up.
