AFAS Excos Cancels ‘ARTS IN YOU’ After FLC Release

The Association of Faculty of Arts Students Executive Council has announced the cancellation of the Arts in You event scheduled to hold on Friday, 20th December, 2024 following the release by the Faculty Legislative Council.

The AFAS Legislative Council has earlier announced after her last plenary session that the ARTS IN YOU event planned by the association’s Director of Social and Welfare Services is an unrecognised event of the Association. 

The FLC, in a release titled ‘Update on Arts in You Event,’ gave reasons for not approving the event. The first reason was that the Director of Social and Welfare Services did not adhere to the house protocol by making original and duplicate physical copies of his report available regarding the event ‘ARTS IN YOU’ scheduled for December 20th, 2024, for which he sold tickets.

In defense, the Director of Social and Welfare Services was said to have mentioned that the physical copies were not available due to late notification from the FLC on the sitting. The Social Director was also accused of not bowing to the Mace at the point of exit from the House which was tagged as a ‘display of non-parliamentary act’. 

The FLC, however, advised AFASites to wait for further clarification on the ARTS IN YOU event since it is currently not an association-recognised event in the release by the Spokesperson of the AFAS FLC, Hon. Lawal Kayode.

The Executive Council’s release titled ‘Update: Arts in You’ signed by the President and the Director of Social and Welfare Services affirmed the cancelation and gave reason for the cancellation of the event to be that it might lead to issues that may negatively affect members of the executive council. The release read in part ‘there are possible concerns that may arise that could potentially put members of the executive council in jeopardy – putting the demeanor of the legislative arm of the association, FLC into perspective”.

In the statement released on the 7th of December, 2024, the executive council asserted that the capital and efforts that have been invested in the planning of the event can be regarded as inefficacious, “the cancellation of the event poses a great disadvantage to the Director of Social and Welfare Services and other members of the executive” having that the resources cannot be recalled.

The students who have however purchase the tickets for the event were however enjoined to request for refund from the persons that they have purchased it from. Adding that “we share in the disappointment of everyone”. While also using the medium to inform AFASites to anticipate the association’s week.
