Kegites Club UI Responds to LSS, Demands Retraction of Defamatory Statements

The Kegites Club, National Headquarters, University of Ibadan in an attempt to correct inaccuracies and unfounded accusations made by the Law Student Society (LSS), has demanded for retraction and public apology over the release from the Law Students Society last week.

In the statement titled “Rejoinder to the Law Student Society (LSS): Setting the record Straight” dated 6th December, 2024 and signed by the Ab National, Chief Abiona Mathew Oluwapelumi, the club maintained that “contrary to  the erroneous claims by the LSS, The Kegites Club is a cultural organization committed to promoting African heritage, intellectualism, and unity.

The Kegite Club, in the rejoinder, asserted that the club’s mission, values, and contribution had been misrepresented, thereby smearing the organisation’s prestigious image. The organisation has a track record of contributing to the community beyond the university walls. It read in part, “The Kegite Club of Nigeria has contributed significantly to cultural preservation and intellectual growth within and beyond university communities.

In refuting the LSS’s release, the Kegites Club stressed that “the club does not condone or engage in activities that compromise the moral or academic standards of its members or the university at large.” Expressing disappointment in the LSS’s erroneous publication, the Kegites Club decried the inclusion of legal provisions that marginalise the rights of LSS members.

The Club through the rejoinder outlined requests from the LSS; firstly, that the LSS publicly retract the defamatory statement made against the club, presentation of a formal apology acknowledging the inaccuracies in the publication, and the removal of any unconstitutional provisions within the LSS that infringe upon the rights of members of the Kegites Club of Nigeria“ or other associations.

Adding that the club urges the LSS to engage in open and constructive dialogue to foster better understanding and collaboration. Affirming that the club “reserves the right to pursue appropriate legal and administrative measures if the defamatory statements are not promptly addressed.
