UCJUI Hosts Journalism Workshop on Mastering Specialized Beats

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJ UI), in collaboration with the Association of Future Young Media Professionals (AFYMP), held a journalism workshop titled “Mastering Specialized Beats in Journalism” at room A314, Faculty of Education on Friday, 10th January 2025.

The Workshop was moderated by Mr. Yinka Olaito from AFYMP, and it featured four speakers including Paul Omorgbe , Feature editor, Nigerian Tribune; Faith Omoniyi, reporter at Techcabal; Adedamola Omoyede from WellsRadio; and Adekola Bankole from Fresh FM. The workshop brought together journalism enthusiasts and professionals to explore the intricacies of specialized beats in modern journalism.

Faith Omoniyi, a reporter at TechCabal, during his session, explored the dynamic world of technology reporting and how he has published different stories in this beat. Omoniyi shared insights on identifying compelling tech stories, reporting , analysing, covering development, various beats under tech reporting, and staying ahead in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

The workshop covered other sessions like understanding how to present indigenous language programmes on radio, finance reporting, etc. and it concluded with a panel discussion featuring all the speakers. The panelists shared their career journeys, tackled questions from the audience, and provided actionable advice for aspiring journalists looking to excel in specialized beats.

“The sessions were practical and eye-opening, especially for someone new to journalism. I believe the workshop is an avenue to get opportunities for young media professionals,” an attendee stated.

AFYMP also reaffirmed their commitment to equipping young journalists with the tools needed to thrive in the evolving media landscape.
