“The Electoral College Shall Comprise 15 members” – AFAS FLC on AFAS By-Election

The Faculty Legislative Council (FLC) of the Association of Faculty of Arts Students (AFAS) has announced plans to form an electoral college that will oversee the bye-election process for vacant executive positions in the association.

According to a release signed by the Speaker of the AFAS FLC, Rt. Hon. Olufemi Inioluwa, and announced by Hon. Lawal Abdul-Qayyum Kayode, “the electoral college shall comprise 15 members: a neutral member from each of the 12 departments within the faculty, two members from the FLC (serving in an oversight capacity), and a representative from the press.”

Once formed, the electoral college will be responsible for screening and electing candidates to fill three key executive positions: Social and Welfare Director, Financial Secretary, and Treasurer. The move is to ensure the smooth running of the affairs of the association.

Voting rights will be granted exclusively to the twelve departmental representatives, a decision made to prevent potential double representation during the election process. As noted in the release: “The twelve members from the different departments are the only ones with voting rights as there are only twelve departments, thus to avoid a case of double voting for a constituency, only the representatives sent by each department have voting rights.”

The head of the electoral college, who must be a 400-level student, will be selected from among the twelve departmental representatives. The electoral college is expected to release further directives for interested candidates within 48 hours of its formation.
